The Federation is called the
International Federation for Theatre Research / Fédération
Internationale pour la Recherche Théâtrale.

2. |
The Federation is an association
conforming to articles 60-79 of the Swiss Civil Code and has its
headquarters in Switzerland.

 |
 |
 |
3. |
Its official languages are English
and French.
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
4. |
For the purposes of this constitution
the words "theatre research" represent "research into all
aspects of all the performing arts".

 |
The Federation exists in the interest
of theatre research and its aims are:
|
 |
1. |
to promote in all countries
international liaisons between organisations and individuals devoted to
theatre research, and to assist in organizing societies for theatre
research;
|

 |
 |
 |
2. |
to organize international congresses,
conferences and symposia;
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
3. |
to encourage interdisciplinary
studies involving theatre research by promoting relations with other
research fields and to collaborate in undertaking works of international
theatre research, as well as to aid in every way all other projects to
foster theatre research in all countries;

 |
 |
4. |
to facilitate the wide distribution
of works of scholarship, technical works, and any important popular
works in the field of theatre research, by means of books, periodicals,
exhibitions, audiovisual productions, and other methods of communicating
and storing information;

 |
 |
 |
5. |
to obtain facilities in libraries,
museums, etc. for theatre research in all countries;
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
6. |
to assist members to obtain grants
for their work from foundations, trusts and other grant-making bodies.

1. |
Institutional membership of the
Federation shall be open to all local, national or international
institutions or organisations, which include theatre research in their
activities and who accept these articles.

 |
 |
2. |
Individual membership of the
Federation shall be open to any person who undertakes to promote the
work and support the objectives of the Federation and who accepts these
articles.
|

 |
 |
 |
3. |
Student membership at a reduced rate
shall be open to any person who, on production of evidence of student or
postgraduate status, undertakes to support the objectives of the
Federation. Student members shall be entitled to all the privileges of
Individual membership apart from receipt of the Federation's
Journal. Student membership may be renewable for two further years under
the same terms.

4. |
Associate membership shall be open,
at the discretion of the President, at a reduced rate or gratis to
institutions or organisations in countries where economic conditions do
not permit the payment of the subscription for Institutional
membership. Associate membership shall normally be open for a maximum
period of three years and Associate members shall be entitled to all the
benefits of Institutional membership (including voting and electoral
rights) apart from receipt of the Federation's Journal.

5. |
Membership in any category shall cease:
 |
 |
a) |
when members resign or cease to exist;
|
 |
 |
b) |
when they are expelled as a result of a vote of the
General Assembly;
|
 |
 |
Institutional or Individual membership shall cease, when, after
notification by the Secretariat, the payment of their annual
subscription falls one year and one month in arrears.

 |
6. |
In order to achieve the closest
co-operation with the International Society of Libraries and Museums of
the Performing Arts, SIBMAS, the Federation grants the Society all the
rights of an Institutional member and the President of SIBMAS is an
ex-officio member of the Executive Committee.

The General Assembly is the sovereign
power of the Federation.
|

2. |
The General Assembly consists of all
the members of the Federation. Each Institutional member shall have five
votes; it shall appoint a delegate for the General Assembly and for each
consultation of the membership, and give notice to the Secretaries
General at least two months in advance. Each Individual member shall
have one vote; each Individual member may hold one proxy vote.

The General Assembly must meet at
least once every four years. The members must be convoked six months in
advance. It must furthermore be convoked in six months upon written
request by at least one fifth of the membership votes.

4. |
It establishes the broad outlines of
the Federation's policy, and delegates its implementation to the
Executive Committee. It receives for ratification reports,
recommendations and financial statements presented by the Executive
Committee. It ratifies such financial charges - subscriptions,
contributions, etc. - as have been authorized by the Executive Committee
between its meetings to be imposed on the members of the Federation.

5. |
It decides the number of
Vice-Presidents and of elected members of the Executive Committee and
the list of officers to be appointed during the next four years,
ensuring that the elected members remain in majority.

6. |
It may expel any Institutional or
Individual member, who fails to fulfil statutory obligations towards the
Federation, if the Executive Committee so requests.

7. |
It has final control over the
constitution and its modification. Any member wishing to amend the
constitution must give notice in writing to the Secretaries General at
least two months before the date of an Executive Committee
meeting. Amendments may be presented to a General Assembly for
ratification only when they have been approved by the Executive
Committee.

The Executive Committee is
responsible for managing the Federation's affairs and finances and
executing the decisions made by the General Assembly, and empowered to
seek, where appropriate, the means to support and maintain the aims of
the Federation.

The Committee consists of the
President of the Federation, the Vice-President or Vice-Presidents, the
two Secretaries-General (one French-language and one English-language),
the Treasurer, the Editors of the periodicals published by the
Federation, the President of SIBMAS and other officers, as well as ten
to fifteen elected members. The Committee members to be elected -
including President and the Vice-President(s) - are elected by ballot by
all members of the Federation as prescribed in Article IV-2. All other
officers except the President and the Vice-Presidents are appointed by
the elected members of the Executive Committee and their appointment is
submitted for renewal every four years.

All terms shall be four years and
every member except in the office of President may serve for two
consecutive terms. Elections shall be held for one half of the elected
Committee every two years. The immediate past President shall be
co-opted for four years to serve with the Executive Committee. No more
than two members may be elected from any one country.

4. |
Candidates for election to the
Executive Committee must be Individual members of the Federation or
members of one of its Institutional members. Nominations can be made by
an Institutional member, or by ten Individual members, or by the
Committee. Nominees must declare in writing that they are willing to
stand as candidates. The names of all candidates that have been
regularly presented shall be published and submitted for election.

5. |
The Executive Committee
shall appoint an Election Committee, which shall be responsible for
inviting and receiving nominations and for the conduct of the
elections. Notice of forthcoming elections and the closing date for
nominations shall be published. It shall be the responsibility of the
members of the Federation to inform the Election Committee if they have
not received voting papers. If it can be shown within three months from
the closing date of the election that 20 % of the members have not
received voting papers, the election can be declared invalid at their
demand.

6. |
The nominating period for President,
Vice-President(s) and elected members of the Committees shall open
during the General Assembly and last three months. The ballot shall take
place during the next three months. For the elections taking place
between two General Assemblies, the nominating period shall last three
months and the ballot the next three months. The new members of the
Committee take up office at the first Executive Committee meeting after
the results of the election have been declared.

7. |
The Committee has power to co-opt
members in addition to those defined in Para. V.2., for a non-renewable
term of four years. Co-opted members shall not have voting rights.

8. |
The Committee shall meet at least
once a year. It must be convoked at least three months in advance. It
shall decide by majority vote if it is necessary to hold additional
meetings and on places and dates.

9. |
The quorum of the Committee shall
consist of one half of the voting members. Each voting member of the
Committee can vote in person, by deputy or by proxy. No member may hold
more than one proxy vote. Decisions shall be taken by majority vote. The
Chair does not vote unless the vote is tied.

10. |
The Committee may decide urgent
matters by correspondence, if it proves impossible to hold a special
meeting. In this case, the Secretaries General in agreement with the
President shall send to each member of the Committee a questionnaire, to
which each member will reply in writing. Decisions will be taken by a
two-thirds majority of those replying.

11. |
The Committee may appoint
ad-hoc Sub-Committees to fulfil different tasks, whose chair persons
shall be chosen from the members of the Executive Committee and whose
terms of reference shall be established by the Executive Committee.

12. |
The Committee entrusts to the
Treasurer the administration of funds, the preparation of the budget and
the accounts. The accounts of the Federation shall be prepared every
year and shall be audited every year by professionally qualified
auditors who are not members of the Federation.

The Federation is established for an
unlimited period. It shall cease to function when, for any reason, three
quarters of the members shall express in writing to the Secretaries
General the desire to dissolve it. In this event, the Executive
Committee shall be authorized to declare the Federation dissolved.

2. |
Any remaining funds shall be given to
international organisations pursuing similar aims, to the publication of
works of theatre research or similar objectives, as determined by the
Committee.

The Federation shall be free from any
political, religious, ethnic, gender or other form of discrimination.
|

 |
2. |
In these articles, unless the context
otherwise requires, the masculine gender shall include the feminine.
|
 |
 |
This constitution shall, as amended
from time to time, come into force at the moment of its approval by the
General Assembly.
